Why U-Joint Grease Pollution Matters — And How the U-Joint Protector Solves It

HQ Truck Parts is proud to present an exclusive look at why the U-Joint Protector was invented, a truly innovative product born from a real-world problem. In this third video in our Inventor story, Ryan Hunter, the inventor himself, continues the story in part 2, and shares the fascinating and often surprising origin story of this game-changing solution. Discover the story behind the U-Joint Protector and why this new approach to a long-standing issue matters to every driver.

The Overlooked Problem of U-Joint Grease

Most marketing around the U-Joint Protector has focused on truck cleanliness. But Ryan Hunter has uncovered a bigger issue: the environmental impact of grease flying off U-joints.

With more than 4 million Class 8 trucks in the U.S.—and 70–80% running greaseable U-joints—the numbers add up fast. Each truck averages 6.5 U-joints. Multiply that by millions of trucks and the grease pumped into them, and the result is staggering: millions of pounds of grease are ultimately flung onto roadways, landscapes, and waterways each year.

Why the EPA Cares About Nonpoint Source Pollution

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies grease that escapes onto roads as nonpoint source pollution. While it isn’t their top focus compared to tailpipe emissions or fuel standards, it remains a serious environmental objective.

Truck grease runoff can contaminate:

  • Roadside soil
  • Drainage ditches and water systems
  • Landscapes and public infrastructure

For solid waste haulers and fleets with compliance concerns, this pollution adds another layer of regulatory and cleanup challenges.

The U-Joint Protector’s Dual Benefits
Ryan emphasizes that the U-Joint Protector provides fleets with two major advantages:

Cleaner Trucks
By containing grease spray, trucks stay cleaner longer — reducing wash time and costs for operators.

Environmental Stewardship
At the same time, drivers and fleets gain a simple, inexpensive way to align with EPA objectives. It’s a rare win-win: fewer contamination issues and a direct reduction in nonpoint source pollution.

A Small Investment, a Big Impact
While truckers are often skeptical of new compliance-related gear, Ryan sees the U-Joint Protector as a practical solution. It’s affordable, easy to install, and directly reduces a real problem that affects both the industry and the environment.

The Solution: The Invention of the U-Joint Protector

HQ U-Joint Protetor a Brand New Product to avoid UJoint Failure and protect from foreign object damage.

Have we answered the question, “Why the U-Joint Protector was invented?” We hope you appreciate that interview. Inventor, Ryan Hunter describes the backstory of the Protector . And, that his U-Joint Protector isn’t just another rubber boot. It’s a tough, engineered barrier that forms a physical shield over the most exposed and damage-prone area of the driveline. It’s designed to hold securely in-place, without modifying the truck or requiring custom mounts.

By acting as a first line of defense, the protector is a win for fleets and drivers, as it prevents:

  • Foreign object damage
  • Contamination from debris, twine, and stalks
  • Premature seal failure and grease loss (extends U-Joint life by 3x)

The second win, is by using the protector some 50 million pounds of grease is kept off the roads.

The Spark: A Trade Show Conversation That Changed Everything

As Ryan Hunter recalls, the U-Joint Protector was designed to keep grease from spattering the undercarriage. But, what we learned was that was only part of the story.

At the Mid-America Trucking Show in 2024, truckers and farmers stopping by his booth consistently pointed out the same thing: while it’s great to “keep the grease in,” they were more concerned about keeping debris out.

They didn’t just want a solution for lubrication retention — they needed one for contamination prevention.

Agricultural Conditions Are Brutal on U-Joints

One of the first groups to flag the issue was farmers. Ryan noted how grain trucks often drive directly through fields during harvest. As combines unload crops, trucks move alongside, often brushing against tall corn stalks — stalks that rise right to the level of a vehicle’s driveline.
